Calculating stair height and depth follows two simple rules: tread plus riser should be between 17 and 17.5 inches, or tread times riser should be between 70...

What's comfortable, what's comfortable instairs? I'm Robert Markey, I've been doingconstruction for many years, I'm going totalk to you about stair height and depth, essentially the height of the risers and thedepth of the treads.

Now in order for ourstairs to be comfortable, there wants to bea proportion, a definite proportion betweenthe height of the riser and the depth of thetread.

There's a couple of formulas that wecan use to determine that. The first is theriser plus the tread is between seventeenand seventeen and a half.

O. k. , let's seehow we did ya. About a nine inch riser withan eight and a half inch, eight and a quarterinch, I mean a nine inch tread and an eightand a quarter inch riser.

Nine plus eightand a quarter plus is seventeen and a quarter. Right on the money there. So this would bea comfortable, comfortable stair.

O. k. , theother way is the riser times the tread isbetween seventy and seventy five. So let'smake that nine times eight and a quarter, nine time eight is seventy two and anotherand a half, so we're still in that ball park.

O. k. , so this officially is a comfortabletread and riser. Now what happens is if you'vebeen in a let's say, a hotel where they havevery long treads, you get these very smallrisers.

You may have a fourteen inch treadand so you've got you know, three, three anda half risers. So you're going up in thislong staircase.

If you've got a basement stairs, that's very steep, you're going to have theopposite. You maybe have a five inch treadand maybe a twelve inch riser or seven inchtread and a ten inch riser.

However you dothis you want to have that, that formula, your riser plus your own is between seventeenand seventeen and a half and that means asyou go up the stairs, it's comfortable.

Steepis comfortable, shallow it's comfortable, pretty standard. Robert Markey and we've beentalking about treads and risers for stairs.
